Big asphalt project required special solutions

The construction of Westenergy’s intermediate storage field and waste treatment hall’s foundations was a large project that involved laying 100,000 m² of asphalt.

12,000 tons of asphalt

Sundström’s Asphalt Paving and Land Construction teams joined forces to build a new intermediate storage field for Westenergy – a company operating in the waste and energy sector – in Mustasaari. The 4.1-hectare area, originally covered with trees, was paved with 100,000 m² of asphalt.

Two layers of asphalt were laid on the storage field. A watertight asphalt mix was installed underneath, with a regular wear-resistant mix on top. This ensured that contaminated water would not seep into the soil. Additionally, a three-meter deep stormwater basin was constructed on the field, with a special solution of two layers of dense asphalt mix at the bottom to achieve even better water tightness.

300 meters of new road

The project also included the construction of approximately 300 meters of road and bicycle track to improve accessibility to the area. Sundström was also responsible for the construction of the waste treatment building’s foundations, water pipes, and rainwater drainage system.

“We have been very satisfied with our cooperation with Sundström – they have worked quickly and cost-effectively. Sundström is a company that stands out for its efficiency and organized project management. We can warmly recommend their services.”
